storm's raging
05:38
|
|
||
I remember when we never watched the weather
when we knew the sun would shine on us
as long as we’re together
we were together
adrift within the season
and when the sun refused to shine
you got yours and I got mine
it was over
and then the storm came
There were days when it all seemed neverending
when all you could hear was the forecasts, the fear,
and the sound of cloudline bending,
it bent below the sky
and held our face to the dirt mound
another loved one washed away
another death, another day
in the outfield
(the storm kept comin')
and I think it’s gonna get worse before it gets worser
my mother used to tell me so before the flood dispersed her
someday the waves will take me home
and I won’t feel so damn alone
We were betting that we’d never see tomorrow
and when tomorrow came we would bet again
for every day that followed
the rain was thick as chains
and our friends were all swept elsewhere
if there’s a god or two above
then they aren’t losin’ any love
for the leftovers
(no they're not)
and I think it’s gonna get worse before it gets worser
my mother used to tell me so before the flood dispersed her
the rain keeps coming thick as tears
cuz they’re all gone and I’m still here
I remember when we couldn’t watch the weather
when the sun refused to shine on us
as long as we’re together
I couldn’t see a future
Couldn’t see a foot beyond the horizon
and I swear if there’s a god above he’s not losing any any any love
I’ll pull the sky down with my bare hands I’ll take all the light I can stand
The sun ain’t comin' back, the sun ain’t comin' back
the storm is raging

dickerson's remorse
03:38
|
|
||
They say it’s better to have loved and lost than never loved at all
But sage words are as useful now as those written in bathroom stalls
The time has come to bury my love, future, present and past
This time I’ve got nothing left, this time I’ve loved my last
A faded maple bat and dog-eared, worn-out letters,
With vows of things looking up and changes for the better
Find a house out west and scrape some cash together
But dreams were always meant to be dot-dash-dot dot dash-dot dashed
Go big or go home I’m told, so I went for lock, stock and barrel
The name up in bright lights and the world broken to the marrow
Instead I found much more in you, my darling peach,
If only I’d realized sooner, when I had you in my reach
A faded maple bat and dog-eared, worn-out letters,
With vows of things looking up and changes for the better
Find a house out west and scrape some cash together
But dreams were always meant to be dot-dash-dot dot dash-dot dashed

way down below
03:30
|
|

As I stand watch at the pearly gates
Don’t wanna push my luck don’t wanna try my fate
‘cause when the flood rolls in my sins’ll be washed away
And I know where my allegiance stands
Yeah I’m tried and true, I’m with the band
But these muddy waters have stirred up something new
Oh, Oh, from way down below (they come a-risin’ up)
Oh, Oh, are you friend or foe (don’t think we’ll ever know)
From deep down in the molten core
And beyond my sea town’s shining shores
From the depths of the dirt they all come crawlin’ in
And it’s no secret that Hades’ lot
Like to stir things up, like to come in hot
And that temptation’s their tactic through and through
Oh, Oh, from way down below (they come a-risin’ up)
Oh, Oh, are you friend or foe (don’t think we’ll ever know)
And I’ve always been a strong-willed gal
And I’d never thought that I’d be pulled down
But I’m feelin’ drawn to flute my faith away
Now the flood waters are risin’ high
It’s time to sink or swim, time to ride or die
I just dig my heels and let the water wash over me
Oh, Oh, from way down below (they come a-risin’ up)
Oh, Oh, are you friend or foe (don’t think we’ll ever know)
Oh, Oh, from way down below (they come a-risin’ up)
Oh, Oh, are you friend or foe (don’t think we’ll ever know)

hell's game
04:27
|
|
||
have a seat my friend, and let me regale you
of a game that i once had to play
it was at the surface pristine
but deep below quite unseemly
and that's just the start of what i wanna say
and so if you ever meet a man who says
that there's just no I in Team,
but there's meat, you see
you'll find it's rather like you and me-
well, that game's really not what it seems
so step on up to the plate, young man
and see if their hand throws true
for you've got debt to pay,
and you're here to stay,
and you've got nothing else to lose
and as you write your name down on the page
you'll have sold your soul to play
but are you better than any of them
when it comes down
to the end of the day?
well, god isn't in our outfields
but this ain't a place of sin
if your name's up on the roster
well, you'd better not foster
or harbor any guilt or regrets within
now, you don't gotta run to catch up,
and you don't have to hide your eyes
it's a brand new day and
you've seen how we play
but have you even seen through their lies?
for he's found a way to trick us all
before you know it the ball's been passed
there's black holes and birds
and nothing's yet been heard
from those players out in the grass
now, we had ourselves an agreement, boy!
you said you'd play for me!
you can't change your mind
or you'll be left behind
and this new life ain't free!
now, step on up to the plate, young man
and see if their hand throws true
you've got debt to pay,
and you're here to stay,
and you've got nothing else to lose
so when you write your name down on the page
and you've sold your soul to play
are you better than any of them
when it comes to the end
of the day?
--(sick instrumental break)--
now this old soul's got a pocket of peanuts,
'cause to them, somebody said,
they're worth so much more
in your hands
than as something on which you've fed
so make your wager boy and see
what way the dice will roll
will you win or will you lose?
it doesn't matter to me 'cause
either way, it's gonna take its toll
your friends got shelled, now you're in hell
or did you just make it to the hall?
those wounds aren't healing, and
your heart's stopped beating
don't you know it's winner takes all?
so welcome to the abattoir!
we've got meat all around the room-
we've got steaks and shanks
and you owe us thanks,
so you'd better figure that all out soon!
so step on up to the plate, young man
and see if their hand throws true
you've got debt to pay,
and you're here to stay,
and you've got something still to prove!
and when you write your name down on the page
you've sold your soul to play
were you better than any of them
when it came
down to the end?
so, step on up to the plate, young man
and see if their hand throws true
you've got debt to pay,
and you're here to stay,
and you've found something else to lose!
so when you write your name down on the page
you'll've sold your soul to play, and
you're no better than the rest of them
when it came to the end
of the day!

dagger silverware
03:56
|
|
||
it’s hard to hold onto a knife when you want spooning
hard to reach out when a blade is all you get
hard to eat when silverware just won’t stop crooning
when all you want is to get your table set
and i’m tired of playing the bad guy
and i’m tired of playing it cool
and i’m tired of playing these two-bit two chord songs
and playing the fool
and i don’t know just how we’re living
when this knife edge is all that’s there
all i know is no one’s loving you like dagger silverware
you keep holding onto me, you’ll just keep bleeding
when my eyes will cut you with a glance
you can’t follow my steps when i’m not leading
‘cause i never learned to dance
and i’m tired of being the bad guy
and i’m tired of being so cruel
and i’m tired of singing these two-bit two chord songs
and playing the fool
and i don’t know how we’ll keep walking
on this knife edge, thin as a hair
all i know is no one’s forking up like dagger silverware
you’ll never satiate the taste you have for disbelieving
when my empty words are filling you with doubt
and your pitch was in to third the very second i was leaving
i never cleared my plate before they called KNIVES OUT
whoa, oh
and i don’t know just how you’re feeling
you don’t know how long i’ll be there
all i know is no one’s stealing out like dagger silverware

eat sleep play ball
03:28
|
|
||
wish i’d stayed back more
after playing when
you asked me
to grab some coffee before the band practice
i said no
that was my mistake
and i'll regret it every day
it’s the end of the world and what do i have to show
nothing but your old mitt and a mattress that you stole
your ashes still won’t scatter from the place i saw you fall
all i know to do is close my eyes n
eat sleep play ball
they say that grief
ebbs gently with the tides
well, here the floods come for your outfield at night
the captain smiles
i don’t reciprocate
in two hours i’m kicking myself cause i don’t learn from my mistakes
it’s the end of the world and what do i have to show
my heart stops every time i catch your name up where it scrolls
we’re broken little pieces being pinned to parker’s wall
but all i know to do is close my eyes n
eat sleep play ball
feels like i blink
and half the team is gone
burned up or feedbacked or simply just moved on
don’t talk much anymore
can’t risk making friends
why bother when there’ll just be another incineration
it’s the end of the world and what do i have to show
an empty locker room with just one jersey that i know
the new kids feel so green; they’ve still got brightness, standing tall
so all i’m gonna do is close my eyes n
eat sleep play
all i know to do is close my eyes n
eat sleep play ball

5am shift
04:54
|
|
||
Numbers floating in the dark, walls painted pre-dawn blue
If I fall asleep right now maybe I can still get an hour
On the backs of my eyelids, all the things I gotta do
Even now a part of me is already standing behind the counter
Sitting on the bathroom floor, where the lights are the brightest
No windows here to witness the corpse of the sun (corpse of the sun)
Half a cup of coffee in a chipped mug, just the way I like it
I am either going in to work or today's the day I run
I'm done I'm done
You won't win
I whisper to myself as I clock in
"If you got time to lean, you got time to clean"
Well if you'd seen the things that I have seen
You wouldn't ask me for a
god damn thing
ooh
this early in the morning
Out back by the dumpsters I listen to the world make its idle threats
Sweet sickly scent of all the things better left forgotten
Gonna ash us out, it says, like some old cigarettes
Let the scavenger magpies decide what stays and what's already rotten
Beneath the hot sun
Today I'm gone
I whisper as I put my nametag on
"Won't you just sing a little song with the early birds?"
If you'd heard the songs that I have heard
You wouldn't say a thing, not a god damn word
to me
This early in the morning
It talks to me as I roll back the trash, deep rumblings from below
Though we both know tomorrow I will still have a store to tend
Think about the end of days, bathed in the neon glow
Still I listen quietly 'cause everybody needs a friend
Just around the bend
I can see the light
I whisper as I lock up for the night
"This world will end, and be born anew"
Well, if you'd seen the mess that was left for me by the night crew
The end of the world wouldn't worry you
ooh
This early in the morning
Tonight I'm gonna throw it all, throw it all away
Down to the Hellmouth where the bad ideas sing
Down in the Hellmouth where the shifting shadows play
Where the words 'rewards program' don't mean a goddamn thing
Rivers of blood and Pepsi rise but never overtake me
When I emerge triumphant no one gathers round to praise me
Have me do the work of ten yet you still underestimate me
Now the stuff of your nightmares no longer has any power to faze me
You can't shake me
You can't break me
I whisper as I walk where the wind takes me
Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime
So I'll play blaseball on company time
If I'm gonna be up before the sun, might as well see it shine
You'll watch me rise
Early in the morning, yeah

night shift
03:38

They tap you on the shoulder
Say “it’s my turn now,
no need to be a hero
No need to be holier-than-thou”
“You’ve got time to rest, kid
Siesta until dawn
Sleep in the shadows
Take a train and get gone”
But they might consider you a flight risk
They know you’re trying to make it out of town
But in the darkness of the night shift
Someone’s gonna track you down
You pray for rain
But the gods give you blood
And the only drink you get
Is from the never-ending floods
And I hope you feel safe now
Blow off some steam
But if you manage to get some rest
I hope you don’t manage to dream
Even if your nightmares
Are better than waking life
The dreams of getting away are worse
Those are the ones that twist in the knife
Be careful when you flip the light switch
You’re in the dirtiest business in town
And in the darkness of the night shift
Something is gonna drag you down
If you pray for rain
You gotta escape the flood
And if it sweeps you somewhere else
They're gonna be out for blood
Then you tap ‘em on the shoulder
Say "it's my turn now
go dance in the moonlight
we'll find a way out of this somehow"
"look for any details that we might miss
retrace every road that leads out of town
but in the darkness of the night shift
something’s gonna bring us down”

nullified

my time is running out
my minutes are numbered
I can feel the void coming closer
before the clock strikes three
it'll be too late for me
one can hardly see a thing in all the noise
I'm sitting at the edge of the world
hiding in the corner
the event horizon twirls
heading forward
devouring quarters
as I falter
a quadrant at a time
three down, one to go
and all I feel is sorrow
wish I stayed with my friends
they didn't cower from the end
being the last to go just means you go alone
I'm sitting at the edge of the world
hiding in the corner
the event horizon twirls
heading forward
coming closer
coming closer
I'm sitting (I wish it wasn't me)
at the edge of the world (I wish it wasn't me)
wasted all my minutes (I wish it wasn't me)
trying to stay alive
and look where it got me (I wish it wasn't me)
I'm just the last one nullified
