lyrics

They put me in the ground on Sunday
Shoved my bones in the dirt
The fire had burned my flesh away
I suppose it could have been worse
They shared their sorrows, wept and then they walked away
How were they to know I wouldn’t stay

I blinked my eyes open on a fine September morn
From the first breath in my lungs I knew I was reborn
I saw the crowd that came to raise me from my grave
I returned, but my soul was not saved

My skin is made of energy, my blood is made of fire
I am what will happen when your best laid plans backfire
And I swear to you I do not mean the things I do
I’m a phoenix from the flame and soon you’ll all be burning too

They put me in my uniform and shoved me on the field
The score to settle was my sword, the cheering was my shield
I heard a voice, heard someone whispering in my head
Take them down, or soon you’ll rejoin the dead

The cowhide left my fingers like a bullet from a gun
When it hit, my heart grew heavy, I knew what I’d done
The target on their backs soon set them all alight
I only wish that I could burn so bright

My skin is made of energy, my blood is made of fire
I am what will happen when your best laid plans backfire
And I swear to you I do not mean the things I do
I’m a phoenix from the flame and soon you’ll all be burning too

I never wanted it to be this way
But there’s a debt in me I must repay
You all suffered to resurrect me
Was I worth trial by necromancy?
There’s a lesson here that I know well
When you raise the dead you’re raising hell

My skin is made of energy, my blood is made of fire
I am what will happen when your best laid plans backfire
And I swear to you I do not mean the things I do
I want to stop the firestorm I want to start anew

My debt has been refinanced and since I have burned no more
Now I’m forced to wander until I’ve settled the score
Someday I will sleep, the gods my soul to keep
And pray that I never again emerge from six feet deep
